Assessment

Is assessment effective and is the award you will receive credible?

If your university or college is registered with us, you should be assessed fairly and receive a credible award at the end of your studies.

Assessments should be challenging, comprehensive and relevant to the course content.

The classification of your degree should accurately reflect your knowledge and skills.

  • Your university or college should have processes in place to ensure assessments are marked consistently, for example, marking teams meeting in advance to compare samples, or independent marking by two or more examiners.
  • Your course could involve a range of assessment types, such as coursework, exams, placements.
  • Assessments should be well planned or staggered, allowing you enough time to digest feedback on one assessment before starting the next one.
  • Assessment feedback could be provided in a variety of formats, including in writing, voice notes and videos where relevant.
  • Your university or college should have appropriate academic regulations and degree algorithms that result in accurate classifications of degrees.
  • Only assessing a limited range of the subject matter or skills.
  • Not providing feedback on your work in a useful format, or in time for you to learn from it before your next assessment.
  • Assessments that allow students to gain marks for work that is not their own.
  • An inappropriate number of assessment attempts allowed.
  • High volumes of non-technical assignments for a technical subject.
  • Too much focus on preparing students for assessments as opposed to teaching.
  • Sharing exam questions in advance, raising concerns about academic integrity.
  • An increase in the number or proportion of first class or 2.1 degrees awarded over time, without evidence to account for the increase.
