Uni Connect phase three guidance for 2021-22

This document sets out the aims, priorities and expectations of the Office for Students’ (OfS) Uni Connect programme for phase three, covering 1 August 2021 through to 31 July 2022. It will be of particular interest to the Uni Connect partnerships as a source of information for the delivery of activity in the 2021-22 academic year.

Surge of mature applicants sparks calls for additional support

Universities and colleges have a “golden opportunity” to help a new generation of adult learners upskill, with strong increases in the number of mature applicants applying to study full time, the Office for Students (OfS) says today.

Improving opportunity and choice for mature students

The opportunity to study as a mature student is essential for equality of opportunity. It provides essential skills for future prosperity, especially as the UK recovers from the pandemic. While numbers of mature students in higher education have declined, particularly for certain types of study, there are positive signs of increasing demand. The government proposes to nurture this growth through its Lifelong Loan Entitlement, and the OfS is working for change through improved information, advice and guidance, regulation in the form of access and participation plans, and funding initiatives to encourage greater flexibility and choice.

OfS programme boosts outreach to underrepresented students

Evaluation of the Uni Connect programme has highlighted positive learner outcomes which are likely to support improving access for underrepresented groups. Insights come from four new reports providing the latest evaluation of Uni Connect’s progress.

Formative evaluation of Uni Connect phase two: Findings

This report, commissioned by the Office for Students (OfS), is part of the ongoing formative evaluation of phase two of Uni Connect, focusing on the programme’s outreach hubs. It presents findings which aim to: support the articulation of the outreach hubs’ Theory of Change; understand partnerships’ progress, processes and practices to date; support the OfS and partnerships with further shaping the remit of the hubs and their future delivery.
